CAT 2019 Slot 1 DILR: Library Borrowing Week

Five members of a library — Asha, Bhanu, Chetan, Diya and Emil — each borrowed exactly one book during a particular week, on five different days from Monday to Friday. The five books were a Poetry collection, a Novel, a Travelogue, a Memoir and a Science book; each member borrowed a different book. The following is known:

1. The Novel was borrowed on the day immediately after the day on which the Poetry collection was borrowed.
2. Asha did not borrow on Monday, and she borrowed on an earlier day than Emil.
3. Chetan borrowed on a later day than Bhanu.
4. Diya borrowed neither the Poetry collection nor the Science book.
5. The Science book was borrowed on the day immediately after the day on which the Memoir was borrowed.
6. Diya and Emil borrowed their books exactly two days apart.
7. Bhanu and Diya borrowed their books exactly three days apart.
8. The Travelogue was the last of the five books to be borrowed that week.

Question 1

Single correct option

Which book did Bhanu borrow?
  1. A. Poetry collection
  2. B. Novel
  3. C. Memoir
  4. D. Science book
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Novel

Deduction: Bhanu and Diya are three days apart, so they are on (Mon, Thu) or (Tue, Fri) in some order. Diya and Emil are two days apart. Asha is not on Monday and is earlier than Emil; Chetan is later than Bhanu.

If Bhanu were on Friday, Chetan could not be later ✗. If Bhanu is Tuesday and Diya Friday, Emil is Wednesday, and Asha (before Emil, not Monday) has no day ✗. If Diya is Tuesday and Bhanu Friday ✗ (Chetan). If Diya is Thursday and Bhanu Monday, Emil is Tuesday and Asha has no day ✗. So Diya = Monday, Bhanu = Thursday, Emil = Wednesday, Asha = Tuesday, Chetan = Friday.

Books: Travelogue on Friday (Chetan). Poetry–Novel and Memoir–Science occupy consecutive-day pairs within Mon–Thu. Diya (Monday) has neither Poetry nor Science, and Monday must start a pair, so Monday = Memoir, Tuesday = Science, Wednesday = Poetry, Thursday = Novel.

| Day | Member | Book |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Diya | Memoir |
| Tuesday | Asha | Science |
| Wednesday | Emil | Poetry |
| Thursday | Bhanu | Novel |
| Friday | Chetan | Travelogue |

Question 2

Single correct option

Who borrowed a book on Wednesday?
  1. A. Diya
  2. B. Asha
  3. C. Emil
  4. D. Bhanu
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Emil

Question 3

Numerical answer

How many days after the Memoir was borrowed was the Travelogue borrowed?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 4

Memoir: Monday; Travelogue: Friday. Difference = 4 days.

Question 4

Single correct option

Which of the following pairs of members borrowed their books on consecutive days?
  1. A. Asha and Emil
  2. B. Bhanu and Asha
  3. C. Diya and Emil
  4. D. Chetan and Emil
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Asha and Emil

Asha (Tuesday) and Emil (Wednesday) are consecutive. Diya–Emil are two days apart, Bhanu–Asha two days apart, Chetan–Emil two days apart.
