CAT 2018 Slot 1 DILR: Shopping Mall Allocation

A small mall has two floors. Each floor has four shops in a single row, numbered 1 to 4 from left to right; shop k on the first floor is directly above shop k on the ground floor. Shops 1 and 4 on each floor are called *end shops*. Eight stores — Bookstore, Café, Electronics, Footwear, Grocery, Jewellery, Pharmacy and Toys — occupy the eight shops, one store per shop. Two shops are *adjacent* only if they are on the same floor and have consecutive numbers.

1. Grocery and Pharmacy are both on the ground floor, in adjacent shops.
2. Grocery is in an end shop.
3. Electronics is directly above the Café.
4. Toys is directly above Grocery.
5. Jewellery is in an end shop.
6. Footwear is in an end shop on the first floor.
7. The Bookstore is adjacent to Electronics.
8. The Café is not adjacent to Grocery, and Pharmacy's shop number is smaller than the Café's.

Monthly rents: ground-floor end shops ₹1.5 lakh, ground-floor middle shops (2 and 3) ₹1.2 lakh, first-floor end shops ₹1.0 lakh and first-floor middle shops ₹0.8 lakh.

Question 1

Single correct option

Which store is directly above the Pharmacy?
  1. A. Footwear
  2. B. Toys
  3. C. Bookstore
  4. D. Electronics
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Bookstore

Grocery is at a ground-floor end with Pharmacy next to it, and Pharmacy's number is smaller than the Café's. If Grocery were in G4, Pharmacy would be G3 and the Café would need a number above 3 — impossible. So Grocery = G1, Pharmacy = G2, Toys = F1.

Footwear needs a first-floor end shop and F1 is Toys, so Footwear = F4. Jewellery also needs an end shop: G1, F1 and F4 are taken, so Jewellery = G4.

The Café is on the ground floor (Electronics is above it) and not adjacent to Grocery, so it is G3 (G4 is Jewellery); Electronics = F3. The Bookstore takes F2 (adjacent to Electronics ✓).

| Floor | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | Toys | Bookstore | Electronics | Footwear |
| Ground | Grocery | Pharmacy | Café | Jewellery |

Above Pharmacy (G2) is the Bookstore.

Question 2

Single correct option

Which store is directly below Footwear?
  1. A. Grocery
  2. B. Jewellery
  3. C. Pharmacy
  4. D. Café
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Jewellery

From the final arrangement, Footwear is in F4. Directly below it is G4, which is Jewellery.

Why Jewellery must be in G4: the only end shops on the ground floor are G1 and G4; G1 is occupied by Grocery (forced because Pharmacy's number must be smaller than the Café's). Jewellery cannot go on the first floor because both first-floor end shops are taken by Toys (above Grocery) and Footwear.

Question 3

Numerical answer

What is the total monthly rent (in ₹ lakh) paid by Toys, the Café and Jewellery together?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 3.7

Locations: Toys = F1 (first-floor end), Café = G3 (ground-floor middle), Jewellery = G4 (ground-floor end).

Rents: 1.0 + 1.2 + 1.5 = 3.7 lakh.

As a check on the whole mall: ground floor 1.5 + 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.5 = 5.4 and first floor 1.0 + 0.8 + 0.8 + 1.0 = 3.6 lakh; the three stores asked about account for 3.7 of the 9.0 lakh total.

Question 4

Single correct option

If the Bookstore and Footwear exchanged their shops, which of the given conditions would be violated?
  1. A. Footwear is in an end shop on the first floor.
  2. B. Electronics is directly above the Café.
  3. C. Toys is directly above Grocery.
  4. D. The Bookstore is adjacent to Electronics.
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Footwear is in an end shop on the first floor.

After the swap, the Bookstore moves to F4 and Footwear to F2.

- Bookstore (F4) is still adjacent to Electronics (F3) — condition holds.
- Footwear (F2) is a middle shop — condition 6 is violated.
- Electronics (F3) above Café (G3) and Toys (F1) above Grocery (G1) are unaffected.

Hence only the Footwear condition fails.
