Numerical answer

A shopkeeper marks an article at ₹2400. He offers successive discounts of 15% and 10% on it. If, after these discounts, he still earns a profit of 20% on his cost price, find his cost price (in ₹).
Show answer and solution

Answer: 1530

Selling price after successive discounts = 2400 × 0.85 × 0.90 = ₹1836. Since this SP represents a 20% profit over cost price, CP = 1836/1.20 = ₹1530. Shortcut: combine successive discounts first (15% and 10% together give an overall discount of 1 − 0.85×0.90 = 23.5%), then divide the resulting SP by (1 + profit%).
