Numerical answer
A trader marks his goods 40% above the cost price and then offers two successive discounts of 10% and 5%. Find his overall profit percentage.
Show answer and solution
Answer: 19.7
Let CP = 100. Marked price = 140. After 10% discount: 140×0.9 = 126. After 5% discount: 126×0.95 = 119.7. Profit % = 119.7 − 100 = 19.7%. Shortcut: overall multiplier = 1.4×0.9×0.95 = 1.197 → 19.7% profit.
