CAT 2017 Slot 2 DILR: Weekly Department Review Meetings

Five departments of a company — HR, Finance, Sales, IT and Ops — each hold exactly one weekly review meeting, one on each working day from Monday to Friday (no two departments share a day). The following is known:

1. IT's meeting is on Wednesday.
2. HR's meeting is earlier in the week than Finance's, which in turn is earlier than Sales's.
3. Ops's meeting is on the day immediately after Sales's meeting.

Determine which department meets on which day.

Question 1

Single correct option

Which department holds its meeting on Monday?
  1. A. HR
  2. B. Finance
  3. C. Sales
  4. D. Ops
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) HR

IT = Wednesday (clue 1). Clue 2 gives HR < Finance < Sales. Since IT occupies Wednesday, HR, Finance and Sales must be drawn from {Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri} in increasing order, and by clue 3, Ops is the day right after Sales.
Testing HR=Mon, Finance=Tue, Sales=Thu, Ops=Fri satisfies all clues and uses each day exactly once. So HR meets on Monday.

Question 2

Numerical answer

If Monday = 1, Tuesday = 2, ..., Friday = 5, what is the day-number of Sales's meeting?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 4

From the unique schedule HR=Mon(1), Finance=Tue(2), IT=Wed(3), Sales=Thu(4), Ops=Fri(5), Sales meets on day 4 (Thursday).

Question 3

Single correct option

Which department meets immediately before IT?
  1. A. HR
  2. B. Finance
  3. C. Sales
  4. D. Ops
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Finance

IT is on Wednesday. From the schedule HR=Mon, Finance=Tue, IT=Wed, Sales=Thu, Ops=Fri, the department meeting immediately before IT (on Tuesday) is Finance.

Question 4

Numerical answer

How many departments hold their meeting before Sales's meeting in the week?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 3

Sales meets on Thursday (day 4). The departments meeting before it are HR (Mon), Finance (Tue) and IT (Wed) — 3 departments.
