CAT 2016 Slot 2 DILR: Circular Seating by Profession

Six friends — a Doctor, an Engineer, a Lawyer, a Teacher, an Artist and a Banker — sit around a circular table, evenly spaced and facing the centre. The following is known:

1. The Lawyer sits immediately to the right of the Doctor.
2. The Engineer sits directly opposite the Doctor.
3. The Teacher sits immediately to the right of the Lawyer.
4. The Banker sits immediately to the left of the Doctor.
5. The Artist does not sit next to the Doctor.

("Right" and "left" are as seen from the centre of the table, i.e., clockwise and counter-clockwise respectively.)

Question 1

Single correct option

Who sits directly opposite the Lawyer?
  1. A. Banker
  2. B. Teacher
  3. C. Artist
  4. D. Engineer
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Artist

Fix the Doctor's seat. Clue 1: Lawyer is immediately clockwise of Doctor. Clue 2: Engineer is opposite Doctor (3 seats away). Clue 3: Teacher is immediately clockwise of Lawyer. Clue 4: Banker is immediately anti-clockwise of Doctor. That fixes 5 seats (Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Engineer, Banker); the only seat left is opposite the Lawyer, which the Artist must occupy — this also satisfies clue 5, since that seat is not adjacent to the Doctor. So the clockwise order is Doctor–Lawyer–Teacher–Engineer–Artist–Banker, and the Artist sits opposite the Lawyer.

Question 2

Single correct option

Who sits immediately to the left of the Artist?
  1. A. Teacher
  2. B. Engineer
  3. C. Banker
  4. D. Doctor
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Engineer

From the deduced clockwise order Doctor–Lawyer–Teacher–Engineer–Artist–Banker, the person immediately anti-clockwise (to the left) of the Artist is the Engineer.

Question 3

Numerical answer

Moving clockwise starting just after the Teacher and ending just before the Banker, how many people are seated in between?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 2

Clockwise order: Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Engineer, Artist, Banker. Moving clockwise from the Teacher towards the Banker, the people passed (not counting the Teacher or Banker themselves) are the Engineer and the Artist — 2 people.

Question 4

Single correct option

Which of the following pairs are seated next to each other?
  1. A. Doctor and Teacher
  2. B. Lawyer and Artist
  3. C. Engineer and Artist
  4. D. Banker and Teacher
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Engineer and Artist

The clockwise seating is Doctor–Lawyer–Teacher–Engineer–Artist–Banker–(Doctor). Adjacent pairs are exactly the consecutive ones in this cycle: Doctor-Lawyer, Lawyer-Teacher, Teacher-Engineer, Engineer-Artist, Artist-Banker, Banker-Doctor. Of the given options, only Engineer and Artist are adjacent; the other three pairs are 2 or 3 seats apart.
