CAT 2021 Slot 3 DILR: Two-Row Seating

Eight friends – A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H – sit in two rows of four seats each. The people in Row 1 face south and the people in Row 2 face north, so that every person directly faces exactly one person in the other row. Each person wears a shirt of one colour; exactly two people wear each of red, blue, green and yellow.

The two end seats of each row are called corner seats. Two people are said to be *diagonally opposite* if they sit in corner seats of different rows and do not face each other. 'Left' and 'right' are from the point of view of the person concerned.

The following information is known:

1. A faces G, and G sits in the north-facing row.
2. F sits immediately to the right of A.
3. The four corner seats are occupied by C, D, E and H, and C is diagonally opposite D.
4. E and B sit in the same row; C and A sit in the same row.
5. C sits at the extreme right end of her row.
6. A wears red. The other person wearing red sits in the other row, but is not G.
7. The person facing F wears green, and so does H.
8. D and F wear shirts of the same colour; so do C and G.
9. C wears yellow.

Question 1

Single correct option

Who sits directly facing H?
  1. A. B
  2. B. D
  3. C. E
  4. D. G
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) D

Deduction. From (1), G is in Row 2 (facing north), so A is in Row 1, facing south. For a south-facing person, right = west, so F is immediately west of A (2). C is in A's row (4) at its right end = the west end (5). The corners are C, D, E, H (3), so A and F take the middle seats: Row 1 = C, F, A, _ (west to east). D is diagonally opposite C, so D is at the east end of Row 2. If E were in Row 1, B would also need a Row 1 seat – none is left – so E is at the west end of Row 2, and H at the east end of Row 1. G faces A (third seat), and B takes the second seat of Row 2.

Colours: A red; F faces B, so B green; H green. D wears F's colour, so D cannot be red (that would make three reds). The other red is in Row 2 and is not G, B or D, so E is red. C is yellow, so G is yellow, and D, F are blue.

Row 1 (facing south), from west to east: C (yellow), F (blue), A (red), H (green)

Row 2 (facing north), from west to east: E (red), B (green), G (yellow), D (blue)

Facing pairs: C–E, F–B, A–G, H–D.

H is at the east end of Row 1, facing D.

Question 2

Single correct option

Who sits immediately to the left of G?
  1. A. B
  2. B. D
  3. C. E
  4. D. C
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) B

Row 1 (facing south), from west to east: C (yellow), F (blue), A (red), H (green)

Row 2 (facing north), from west to east: E (red), B (green), G (yellow), D (blue)

Facing pairs: C–E, F–B, A–G, H–D.

G sits in Row 2 and faces north, so G's left is west. The person immediately west of G in Row 2 is B.

Trap: Reading 'left' from the page's point of view would give D, but directions are always from the seated person's point of view – and they flip between the two rows.

Question 3

Numerical answer

How many of the people sitting in corner seats wear a blue or a yellow shirt?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 2

Row 1 (facing south), from west to east: C (yellow), F (blue), A (red), H (green)

Row 2 (facing north), from west to east: E (red), B (green), G (yellow), D (blue)

Facing pairs: C–E, F–B, A–G, H–D.

Corner seats: C (yellow), H (green), E (red), D (blue).

Blue or yellow: C and D, so the answer is 2.

Question 4

Numerical answer

How many of the four pairs of people facing each other wear shirts of the same colour?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 0

Row 1 (facing south), from west to east: C (yellow), F (blue), A (red), H (green)

Row 2 (facing north), from west to east: E (red), B (green), G (yellow), D (blue)

Facing pairs: C–E, F–B, A–G, H–D.

Check each facing pair:
- C (yellow) – E (red)
- F (blue) – B (green)
- A (red) – G (yellow)
- H (green) – D (blue)

None of the pairs match, so the answer is 0. The same-colour pairs (A–E red, B–H green, D–F blue, C–G yellow) all sit diagonally across or in the same row, never face to face.

Question 5

Single correct option

What is the colour of the shirt of the person sitting immediately to the right of H?
  1. A. Red
  2. B. Green
  3. C. Blue
  4. D. Yellow
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Red

Row 1 (facing south), from west to east: C (yellow), F (blue), A (red), H (green)

Row 2 (facing north), from west to east: E (red), B (green), G (yellow), D (blue)

Facing pairs: C–E, F–B, A–G, H–D.

H is at the east end of Row 1 and faces south, so H's right is west. The person immediately west of H is A, who wears red.

Trap: Taking H's right as east would suggest there is nobody there (H is at a corner) or lead to picking someone from the other row.
