Single correct option

In a right-angled triangle the two sides containing the right angle are 9 cm and 12 cm. The length of the perpendicular from the right-angle vertex to the hypotenuse is
  1. A. 6 cm
  2. B. 6.8 cm
  3. C. 7.2 cm
  4. D. 7.5 cm
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 7.2 cm

Hypotenuse = √(81 + 144) = 15 cm.

Area computed two ways: (1/2)(9)(12) = (1/2)(15)(h) ⇒ h = 108/15 = 7.2 cm.

Tip: In a right triangle, altitude to the hypotenuse = (product of legs)/(hypotenuse).
