Let varphi(x)=(ln x)/(x) for x>0.

One or more options correct

Let φ(x)=ln⁡xx\varphi(x)=\dfrac{\ln x}{x} for x>0x>0. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. 100101<101100100^{101}<101^{100}
  2. B. The equation 2x=x22^{x}=x^{2} has exactly two real solutions
  3. C. There is exactly one positive integer nn for which n1/n>2n^{1/n}>\sqrt2
  4. D. πe>eπ\pi^{e}>e^{\pi}
Show answer and solution

Answer: C

φ′(x)=1−ln⁡xx2\varphi'(x)=\frac{1-\ln x}{x^{2}}, so φ\varphi increases on (0,e)(0,e) and decreases on (e,∞)(e,\infty). (A) False: φ(100)>φ(101)\varphi(100)>\varphi(101) gives 101ln⁡100>100ln⁡101101\ln100>100\ln101, i.e. 100101>101100100^{101}>101^{100}. (B) False: x=2x=2 and x=4x=4 are solutions, and there is also a negative root near x≈−0.767x\approx-0.767, since 2x−x22^{x}-x^{2} is −12-\frac12 at x=−1x=-1 and 11 at x=0x=0; so there are three real solutions. (C) True: n1/n>2n^{1/n}>\sqrt2 means φ(n)>φ(2)=φ(4)\varphi(n)>\varphi(2)=\varphi(4), which for integers holds only at n=3n=3 since φ(1)=0\varphi(1)=0 and φ\varphi decreases for n≥3n\ge3 with φ(4)=φ(2)\varphi(4)=\varphi(2). (D) False: φ(e)>φ(π)\varphi(e)>\varphi(\pi) gives π>eln⁡π\pi>e\ln\pi, i.e. eπ>πee^{\pi}>\pi^{e}. Only (C) is correct.
