Let pk(x)=x^3-12x+k, where k is a real constant, and let N(k) denote the number of distinct real roots of pk(x)=0.

One or more options correct

Let pk(x)=x3−12x+kp_k(x)=x^3-12x+k, where kk is a real constant, and let N(k)N(k) denote the number of distinct real roots of pk(x)=0p_k(x)=0. Which of the following is/are correct?
  1. A. N(10)=3N(10)=3
  2. B. N(16)=2N(16)=2
  3. C. N(−20)=3N(-20)=3
  4. D. N(−16)=1N(-16)=1
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B

Differentiate: pk′(x)=3x2−12=3(x−2)(x+2)p_k'(x)=3x^2-12=3(x-2)(x+2), so pkp_k has a local maximum at x=−2x=-2 with value pk(−2)=16+kp_k(-2)=16+k and a local minimum at x=2x=2 with value pk(2)=k−16p_k(2)=k-16. Three distinct real roots need 16+k>016+k>0 and k−16<0k-16<0, i.e. ∣k∣<16|k|<16; a repeated root occurs when k=±16k=\pm16 (two distinct roots); one real root when ∣k∣>16|k|>16. Thus k=10k=10 gives 33 roots (A true); k=16k=16 gives a double root at 22 and a simple root at −4-4, so N=2N=2 (B true); k=−20k=-20 has ∣k∣>16|k|>16, hence a single real root (C false); k=−16k=-16 gives roots 44 and a double root −2-2, so N=2N=2, not 11 (D false). Numerical roots confirm this.
