Define f(x)=∫0^x(t-1)(t-2) e^-t dt for x∈mathbbR.

One or more options correct

Define f(x)=∫0x(t−1)(t−2) e−t dtf(x)=\displaystyle\int_{0}^{x}(t-1)(t-2)\,e^{-t}\,dt for x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}. Which of the following statements is (are) correct?
  1. A. ff has a local maximum at x=1x=1 and a local minimum at x=2x=2
  2. B. ff is a bounded function on R\mathbb{R}
  3. C. The equation f(x)=0.6f(x)=0.6 has exactly three real roots
  4. D. The equation f(x)=0.5f(x)=0.5 has exactly three real roots
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, C

Integrating by parts, ∫(t2−3t+2)e−tdt=−e−t(t2−t+1)\int(t^2-3t+2)e^{-t}dt=-e^{-t}(t^2-t+1), so f(x)=1−e−x(x2−x+1)f(x)=1-e^{-x}(x^2-x+1). (A) f′(x)=(x−1)(x−2)e−xf'(x)=(x-1)(x-2)e^{-x} changes sign from ++ to −- at 11 and from −- to ++ at 22; correct. (B) As x→−∞x\to-\infty, e−x(x2−x+1)→∞e^{-x}(x^2-x+1)\to\infty, so f→−∞f\to-\infty and ff is unbounded; incorrect. (C) f(1)=1−e−1≈0.632f(1)=1-e^{-1}\approx0.632 and f(2)=1−3e−2≈0.594f(2)=1-3e^{-2}\approx0.594, with f(0)=0f(0)=0 and f→1f\to1. The level 0.60.6 lies strictly between f(2)f(2) and f(1)f(1), so it is met once on (0,1)(0,1), once on (1,2)(1,2) and once on (2,∞)(2,\infty): three roots; correct. (D) 0.5<f(2)0.5<f(2), so 0.50.5 is reached only once (on (0,1)(0,1)); incorrect. Answer: A and C.
