Single correct option

Photons emitted when a hydrogen-like Li2+\mathrm{Li^{2+}} ion makes the transition n=3→n=2n=3\to n=2 fall on a metal surface of work function 4.0 eV4.0\ \mathrm{eV}. Take the hydrogen ground-state energy as 13.6 eV13.6\ \mathrm{eV} and the de Broglie wavelength of an electron of kinetic energy KK (in eV) as 1.226/K nm1.226/\sqrt{K}\ \mathrm{nm}. The de Broglie wavelength of the fastest photoelectrons is closest to
  1. A. 0.30 nm0.30\ \mathrm{nm}
  2. B. 0.65 nm0.65\ \mathrm{nm}
  3. C. 0.48 nm0.48\ \mathrm{nm}
  4. D. 0.34 nm0.34\ \mathrm{nm}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 0.34 nm0.34\ \mathrm{nm}

For a hydrogen-like ion the photon energy is E=13.6 Z2(1nf2−1ni2) eVE=13.6\,Z^2\left(\dfrac1{n_f^2}-\dfrac1{n_i^2}\right)\ \mathrm{eV}. With Z=3Z=3, nf=2n_f=2, ni=3n_i=3 this is 13.6×9×536=17.0 eV13.6\times 9\times\dfrac{5}{36}=17.0\ \mathrm{eV}. The maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons is Kmax=hν−ϕ=17.0−4.0=13.0 eVK_{max}=h\nu-\phi=17.0-4.0=13.0\ \mathrm{eV}. The corresponding de Broglie wavelength is λ=1.226/13.0=0.340 nm\lambda=1.226/\sqrt{13.0}=0.340\ \mathrm{nm}. The value 0.30 nm0.30\ \mathrm{nm} results if the work function is forgotten, 0.65 nm0.65\ \mathrm{nm} results from using Z=2Z=2 (giving K=3.56 eVK=3.56\ \mathrm{eV}), and 0.48 nm0.48\ \mathrm{nm} from using half the correct kinetic energy. Hence the correct choice is 0.34 nm0.34\ \mathrm{nm}, the only value following from the full chain: ion transition energy, Einstein's photoelectric equation, then the de Broglie relation.
