One or more options correct

A radioactive nuclide A\mathrm{A} of decay constant 2λ2\lambda decays into a nuclide B\mathrm{B} of decay constant λ\lambda, and B\mathrm{B} decays into a stable nuclide. At t=0t=0 there are N0N_0 nuclei of A\mathrm{A} and none of B\mathrm{B}. Choose the correct statement(s).
  1. A. The number of B\mathrm{B} nuclei is maximum at t=ln⁡2λt=\dfrac{\ln 2}{\lambda}.
  2. B. The maximum number of B\mathrm{B} nuclei is N0/4N_0/4.
  3. C. At the instant of maximum B\mathrm{B}, the numbers of A\mathrm{A} and B\mathrm{B} nuclei are equal.
  4. D. For all times after the instant of maximum B\mathrm{B}, the activity of B\mathrm{B} exceeds the activity of A\mathrm{A}.

Answer: A, D

Here NA=N0e−2λtN_A=N_0e^{-2\lambda t} and the Bateman solution gives NB=2λN0λ−2λ(e−2λt−e−λt)=2N0(e−λt−e−2λt)N_B=\dfrac{2\lambda N_0}{\lambda-2\lambda}\left(e^{-2\lambda t}-e^{-\lambda t}\right)=2N_0\left(e^{-\lambda t}-e^{-2\lambda t}\right). Setting dNB/dt=0dN_B/dt=0 means the production rate 2λNA2\lambda N_A equals the decay rate λNB\lambda N_B, i.e. e−λt=1/2e^{-\lambda t}=1/2, so t=ln⁡2/λt=\ln2/\lambda; A is true. At this time NB=2N0(1/2−1/4)=N0/2N_B=2N_0(1/2-1/4)=N_0/2, not N0/4N_0/4; B is false. There NA=N0/4N_A=N_0/4, which is half of NBN_B, so C is false. At the maximum, the activities are equal (2λNA=λNB2\lambda N_A=\lambda N_B); afterwards e−λte^{-\lambda t} decays more slowly than e−2λte^{-2\lambda t}, so the activity of B stays larger; D is true.
