Single correct option

The gas-phase reaction A(g)→2B(g)+C(g)\mathrm{A(g)\to 2B(g)+C(g)} is first order in A\mathrm{A} and is carried out in a rigid vessel at constant temperature, starting with pure A\mathrm{A} at 100 kPa100\ \mathrm{kPa}. The total pressure is found to be 250 kPa250\ \mathrm{kPa} after 30 min30\ \mathrm{min}. All gases behave ideally. The total pressure at 60 min60\ \mathrm{min} will be
  1. A. 262.5 kPa262.5\ \mathrm{kPa}
  2. B. 275.0 kPa275.0\ \mathrm{kPa}
  3. C. 300.0 kPa300.0\ \mathrm{kPa}
  4. D. 287.5 kPa287.5\ \mathrm{kPa}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 287.5 kPa287.5\ \mathrm{kPa}

Let pAp_A be the partial pressure of A\mathrm{A} and let xx be the pressure of A\mathrm{A} that has reacted. At constant volume and temperature, pA=100−xp_A=100-x while the total pressure is Pt=(100−x)+2x+x=100+2xP_t=(100-x)+2x+x=100+2x. After 30 min30\ \mathrm{min}, 250=100+2x250=100+2x gives x=75x=75, so pA=25 kPap_A=25\ \mathrm{kPa}. Because the reaction is first order in A\mathrm{A}, pAp_A decays exponentially, and pAp_A fell from 100100 to 2525, a factor of 44, in 30 min30\ \mathrm{min}. That is two half-lives, so t1/2=15 mint_{1/2}=15\ \mathrm{min}. At 60 min60\ \mathrm{min} there have been four half-lives and pA=100/16=6.25 kPap_A=100/16=6.25\ \mathrm{kPa}, so x=93.75x=93.75 and Pt=100+2(93.75)=287.5 kPaP_t=100+2(93.75)=287.5\ \mathrm{kPa}. Option (B) is the pressure at 45 min45\ \mathrm{min}, and (C) is the limit as t→∞t\to\infty.
