Numerical answer

Optically pure (+)(+)-22-iodooctane is dissolved in acetone containing a very large excess of radioactive iodide, I∗−\mathrm{I^{*-}}. Every substitution of I\mathrm{I} by I∗\mathrm{I^*} occurs by a bimolecular mechanism with complete inversion of configuration, and the substitution is pseudo-first-order in the substrate. The incorporation of the label into the substrate is half complete in 20.0 min20.0\ \mathrm{min} (the fraction of substrate still unlabelled falls to one half). Find the time, in minutes, at which the observed optical rotation of the solution has fallen to 10.0%10.0\% of its initial value. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 33.22

Let each substrate molecule undergo substitution with pseudo-first-order rate constant kk. Because the labelled iodide is in huge excess, a molecule that has reacted once is almost certainly labelled, so the unlabelled fraction is e−kte^{-kt} and the label half-time ln⁡2/k=20.0 min\ln2/k=20.0\ \mathrm{min} gives k=0.03466 min−1k=0.03466\ \mathrm{min^{-1}}. Each substitution inverts the configuration. If RR and SS are the mole fractions of the two enantiomers, then d(R−S)/dt=−2k(R−S)d(R-S)/dt=-2k(R-S) because every event moves a molecule from one enantiomer to the other and changes the difference by two units. Hence the optical rotation, proportional to R−SR-S, decays as e−2kte^{-2kt}, i.e. the racemisation rate constant is twice the substitution rate constant. Setting e−2kt=0.100e^{-2kt}=0.100 gives t=ln⁡10/(2k)=2.3026/(0.06931)=33.22 mint=\ln10/(2k)=2.3026/(0.06931)=33.22\ \mathrm{min}. Equivalently t=12(20.0)log⁡210=33.22 mint=\tfrac12(20.0)\log_2 10=33.22\ \mathrm{min}.
