Single correct option

Let ω=e2πi/7\omega=e^{2\pi i/7}, α=ω+ω2+ω4\alpha=\omega+\omega^{2}+\omega^{4} and β=ω3+ω5+ω6\beta=\omega^{3}+\omega^{5}+\omega^{6}. The quadratic equation with real coefficients whose roots are α2\alpha^{2} and β2\beta^{2} is
  1. A. x2+3x−4=0x^{2}+3x-4=0
  2. B. x2−3x+4=0x^{2}-3x+4=0
  3. C. x2+3x+4=0x^{2}+3x+4=0
  4. D. x2+x+4=0x^{2}+x+4=0
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) x2+3x+4=0x^{2}+3x+4=0

Since 1+ω+⋯+ω6=01+\omega+\dots+\omega^{6}=0, we get α+β=−1\alpha+\beta=-1. Also αβ=∑\alpha\beta=\sum of nine terms ωa+b\omega^{a+b} with a∈{1,2,4}a\in\{1,2,4\}, b∈{3,5,6}b\in\{3,5,6\}; the exponents reduce mod 7 to 4,6,0,5,0,1,0,2,34,6,0,5,0,1,0,2,3, i.e. three copies of 11 and each of ω,…,ω6\omega,\dots,\omega^{6} once, so αβ=3+(−1)=2\alpha\beta=3+(-1)=2. Hence α,β\alpha,\beta are roots of x2+x+2=0x^{2}+x+2=0. Now α2+β2=(α+β)2−2αβ=1−4=−3\alpha^{2}+\beta^{2}=(\alpha+\beta)^{2}-2\alpha\beta=1-4=-3 and α2β2=(αβ)2=4\alpha^{2}\beta^{2}=(\alpha\beta)^{2}=4. The required equation is x2−(−3)x+4x^{2}-(-3)x+4, that is x2+3x+4=0x^{2}+3x+4=0. Option (D) is the equation for α,β\alpha,\beta with product wrongly taken as 4; option (B) has the sign of the sum reversed; option (A) uses product −4-4.
