Single correct option

Let zz be a complex number satisfying arg⁡ ⁣(z−1z+1)=π4\arg\!\left(\dfrac{z-1}{z+1}\right)=\dfrac{\pi}{4}. The maximum value of ∣z−2∣|z-2| is
  1. A. 5+1\sqrt5+1
  2. B. 5+2\sqrt5+\sqrt2
  3. C. 2+22+\sqrt2
  4. D. 5+2\sqrt5+2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 5+2\sqrt5+\sqrt2

Write z=x+iyz=x+iy. The argument of (z−1)/(z+1)(z-1)/(z+1) is the angle subtended at zz by the segment joining −1-1 and 11. A constant angle π/4\pi/4 means zz lies on an arc of a circle through ±1\pm1 whose central angle is π/2\pi/2, so the radius is 2\sqrt2 and the centre is (0,1)(0,1) (upper side, so the arc is the major arc with y>0y>0). Thus x2+(y−1)2=2x^2+(y-1)^2=2, y>0y>0. The farthest point of the circle from P=(2,0)P=(2,0) lies on the ray from PP through the centre extended beyond it, at distance ∣PC∣+r=5+2|PC|+r=\sqrt5+\sqrt2; this point is C+2 (−2,1)/5C+\sqrt2\,(-2,1)/\sqrt5, whose ordinate is positive, so it lies on the required arc. Hence the maximum is 5+2\sqrt5+\sqrt2. Option 5+2\sqrt5+2 wrongly uses radius 22, and 5+1\sqrt5+1 uses radius 11.
