Single correct option

Let zz be a complex number satisfying arg⁡ ⁣(z−1z+1)=π4\arg\!\left(\dfrac{z-1}{z+1}\right)=\dfrac\pi4. Let mm and MM be the least and the greatest values of ∣z−2∣|z-2| as zz varies over all such numbers. Then mMmM equals

  2. B. 5−225-2\sqrt2
  3. C. 22
  4. D. 55

Answer: (A) 33

Put z=x+iyz=x+iy. arg⁡z−1z+1=arg⁡(z−1)−arg⁡(z+1)=π4\arg\frac{z-1}{z+1}=\arg(z-1)-\arg(z+1)=\frac\pi4 means the segment from −1-1 to 11 subtends an angle π4\frac\pi4 at zz (anticlockwise sense), so zz lies on the upper arc of the circle through ±1\pm1 whose inscribed angle is π4\frac\pi4. The central angle is π2\frac\pi2, so the centre is C(0,1)C(0,1) and the radius is 2\sqrt2; the locus is the part with y>0y>0 (check: z=i(1+2)z=i(1+\sqrt2) gives arg⁡=π−2tan⁡−1(1+2)=π4\arg=\pi-2\tan^{-1}(1+\sqrt2)=\frac\pi4). The point P(2,0)P(2,0) is at distance 5\sqrt5 from CC. The nearest and farthest points on the circle lie on line PCPC at (2/5)(\sqrt2/\sqrt5) along it, with y=1∓2/5>0y=1\mp\sqrt{2/5}>0, so both belong to the arc. Hence m=5−2m=\sqrt5-\sqrt2, M=5+2M=\sqrt5+\sqrt2 and mM=5−2=3mM=5-2=3.
