Let y=y(x)y=y(x) be the solution of 2xy dydx=x2+y22xy\,\dfrac{dy}{dx}=x^{2}+y^{2} for x>0x>0 with y(1)=2y(1)=2 and y>0y>0. The slope of the tangent to the curve at the point where x=3x=3 is
  1. A. 32\dfrac{3}{2}
  2. B. 322\dfrac{3\sqrt2}{2}
  3. C. 928\dfrac{9\sqrt2}{8}
  4. D. 324\dfrac{3\sqrt2}{4}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 324\dfrac{3\sqrt2}{4}

Put v=y2v=y^2. Then dvdx=2ydydx\frac{dv}{dx}=2y\frac{dy}{dx}, so xdvdx=x2+vx\frac{dv}{dx}=x^2+v, i.e. dvdx−vx=x\frac{dv}{dx}-\frac vx=x. The integrating factor is 1x\frac1x, giving ddx ⁣(vx)=1\frac{d}{dx}\!\left(\frac vx\right)=1, so v=x2+cxv=x^2+cx.
Using y(1)=2y(1)=2: 4=1+c4=1+c, so c=3c=3 and y2=x2+3xy^2=x^2+3x.
At x=3x=3: y2=18y^2=18, y=32y=3\sqrt2.
Differentiating, 2y y′=2x+32y\,y'=2x+3, so y′(3)=92⋅32=322=324y'(3)=\dfrac{9}{2\cdot3\sqrt2}=\dfrac{3}{2\sqrt2}=\dfrac{3\sqrt2}{4}.
The value 32\frac32 comes from dropping the 2\sqrt2, and 322\frac{3\sqrt2}{2} from a slip of a factor of 22 in the denominator. The substitution v=y2v=y^2 is the key step because it converts the homogeneous equation into a linear first-order one, which is solved by the integrating factor 1/x1/x.
