JEE Advanced 2021 Paper 2 Mathematics: Paragraph 1

A differentiable function f:(0,∞)→Rf:(0,\infty)\to\mathbb R satisfies the differential equation xf′(x)−2f(x)=x3exx f'(x)-2f(x)=x^{3}e^{x} for all x>0x>0, together with the condition f(1)=0f(1)=0. Let mm denote the minimum value attained by ff on (0,∞)(0,\infty). (Use e=2.71828e=2.71828.)

Question 1

Numerical answer

Using the information above, find the value of f(2)f(2). Give the answer correct to two decimal places.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 18.68

Treat the equation as linear: divide by x3x^3 to get (fx2)′=xf′−2fx3=ex\left(\dfrac{f}{x^2}\right)'=\dfrac{xf'-2f}{x^3}=e^{x}. Integrating, f(x)/x2=ex+cf(x)/x^2=e^x+c, and f(1)=0f(1)=0 gives c=−ec=-e. Hence f(x)=x2(ex−e)f(x)=x^2(e^x-e). At x=2x=2, f(2)=4(e2−e)=4(7.38906−2.71828)=4(4.67077)=18.683f(2)=4(e^2-e)=4(7.38906-2.71828)=4(4.67077)=18.683. Therefore f(2)≈18.68f(2)\approx18.68.

Question 2

Numerical answer

Using the information above, find the value of mm. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.
Show answer and solution

Answer: -0.35

From f(x)=x2(ex−e)f(x)=x^2(e^x-e) we get f′(x)=x[(x+2)ex−2e]f'(x)=x\left[(x+2)e^x-2e\right]. For x>0x>0 the bracket is strictly increasing (its derivative is (x+3)ex>0(x+3)e^x>0) and is negative at x→0+x\to0^+ (value 2−2e<02-2e<0) and positive for large xx, so f′f' changes sign from negative to positive exactly once at x0x_0 where (x0+2)ex0=2e(x_0+2)e^{x_0}=2e. Solving numerically, x0≈0.6999x_0\approx0.6999. Thus m=f(x0)=x02(ex0−e)≈0.4899×(2.0136−2.7183)≈−0.3452m=f(x_0)=x_0^2(e^{x_0}-e)\approx0.4899\times(2.0136-2.7183)\approx-0.3452. This is the global minimum on (0,∞)(0,\infty) since f→∞f\to\infty as x→∞x\to\infty. Hence m≈−0.35m\approx-0.35.
