Let y=y(x), x>0, be the solution of xdy/dx+2y=x^2 with y(1)=1.

One or more options correct

Let y=y(x)y=y(x), x>0x>0, be the solution of xdydx+2y=x2x\dfrac{dy}{dx}+2y=x^{2} with y(1)=1y(1)=1. Which of the following is/are correct?
  1. A. y(2)=1716y(2)=\dfrac{17}{16}
  2. B. The minimum value of y(x)y(x) for x>0x>0 is 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}
  3. C. ∫12y(x) dx=56\displaystyle\int_1^2 y(x)\,dx=\dfrac56
  4. D. lim⁡x→∞y(x)x2=14\displaystyle\lim_{x\to\infty}\dfrac{y(x)}{x^{2}}=\dfrac14
Show answer and solution

Answer: B, D

Multiplying by xx gives x2y′+2xy=x3x^2y'+2xy=x^3, i.e. ddx(x2y)=x3\dfrac{d}{dx}(x^2y)=x^3. Hence x2y=x44+Cx^2y=\tfrac{x^4}{4}+C, and y(1)=1y(1)=1 gives C=34C=\tfrac34, so y=x24+34x2y=\dfrac{x^2}{4}+\dfrac{3}{4x^2}. (A) y(2)=1+316=1916y(2)=1+\tfrac{3}{16}=\tfrac{19}{16}, so (A) is false. (B) y′=x2−32x3=0y'=\tfrac x2-\tfrac{3}{2x^3}=0 gives x4=3x^4=3, and y=34+343=32y=\tfrac{\sqrt3}{4}+\tfrac{3}{4\sqrt3}=\tfrac{\sqrt3}{2}, which is the minimum since y→∞y\to\infty at both ends; true. (C) ∫12y dx=[x312−34x]12=2324≠56\int_1^2y\,dx=\left[\tfrac{x^3}{12}-\tfrac{3}{4x}\right]_1^2=\tfrac{23}{24}\ne\tfrac56, false. (D) y/x2=14+34x4→14y/x^2=\tfrac14+\tfrac{3}{4x^4}\to\tfrac14, true.
