Let y=y(x) with y>0 be the solution of (x^2+y^2 dx=2xy dy for x>0 passing through the point (2,√2).

One or more options correct

Let y=y(x)y=y(x) with y>0y>0 be the solution of (x2+y2) dx=2xy dy(x^{2}+y^{2})\,dx=2xy\,dy for x>0x>0 passing through the point (2,2)(2,\sqrt2). Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. y(4)=23y(4)=2\sqrt3
  2. B. The curve y2=x2−xy^2=x^2-x obtained is a hyperbola of eccentricity 22
  3. C. The slope of the tangent at (2,2)(2,\sqrt2) is 34\dfrac34
  4. D. The tangent at (2,2)(2,\sqrt2) meets the xx-axis at (43,0)\left(\dfrac43,0\right)
Show answer and solution

Answer: A

The equation is homogeneous; put y=vxy=vx. Then (1+v2)=2v(v+xdvdx)(1+v^2)=2v\left(v+x\frac{dv}{dx}\right) gives 2vx dv=(1−v2) dx2vx\,dv=(1-v^2)\,dx, hence 2v dv1−v2=dxx\frac{2v\,dv}{1-v^2}=\frac{dx}{x} and −ln⁡∣1−v2∣=ln⁡x+C-\ln|1-v^2|=\ln x+C, i.e. x2−y2=cxx^2-y^2=cx. The point (2,2)(2,\sqrt2) gives c=1c=1, so y2=x2−xy^2=x^2-x. At x=4x=4, y=12=23y=\sqrt{12}=2\sqrt3: (A) true. Writing it as (x−12)2−y2=14\left(x-\frac12\right)^2-y^2=\frac14 shows a rectangular hyperbola, eccentricity 2\sqrt2, not 22: (B) false. Differentiating, 2yy′=2x−12yy'=2x-1, so at (2,2)(2,\sqrt2) the slope is 322=324≠34\frac{3}{2\sqrt2}=\frac{3\sqrt2}{4}\ne\frac34: (C) false. The tangent meets the xx-axis where x=2−2⋅223=23x=2-\sqrt2\cdot\frac{2\sqrt2}{3}=\frac23, not 43\frac43: (D) false. Hence only option A is correct. The homogeneous substitution y=vxy=vx and the observation that the family x2−y2=cxx^2-y^2=cx is a set of rectangular hyperbolas through the origin make each remaining option a quick check.
