Single correct option

A concentration cell is set up as Ag(s) ∣ Ag2CrO4(s) saturated in 0.010 M K2CrO4 ∥ Ag+(0.10 M) ∣ Ag(s)\mathrm{Ag(s)\,|\,Ag_2CrO_4(s)\ saturated\ in\ 0.010\ M\ K_2CrO_4\,\|\,Ag^+(0.10\ M)\,|\,Ag(s)} at 298 K298\ \mathrm{K}. Its EMF is measured as 0.236 V0.236\ \mathrm{V}. Take 2.303RTF=0.059 V\dfrac{2.303RT}{F}=0.059\ \mathrm{V}. Assuming ideal behaviour, the solubility product KspK_{sp} of Ag2CrO4\mathrm{Ag_2CrO_4} is
  1. A. 1.0×10−121.0\times10^{-12}
  2. B. 1.0×10−101.0\times10^{-10}
  3. C. 1.0×10−71.0\times10^{-7}
  4. D. 4.0×10−124.0\times10^{-12}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1.0×10−121.0\times10^{-12}

Both half cells are Ag+/Ag\mathrm{Ag^+/Ag}, so E∘=0E^\circ=0 and E=0.059log⁡[Ag+]cathode[Ag+]anodeE=0.059\log\dfrac{[\mathrm{Ag^+}]_{cathode}}{[\mathrm{Ag^+}]_{anode}}. The right electrode (0.10 M) is the cathode, so 0.236=0.059log⁡0.10c0.236=0.059\log\dfrac{0.10}{c}, giving log⁡(0.10/c)=4\log(0.10/c)=4 and c=[Ag+]=1.0×10−5 Mc=[\mathrm{Ag^+}]=1.0\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{M} in the left half cell. In that half cell the chromate concentration is fixed by the added K2CrO4\mathrm{K_2CrO_4} (the contribution from dissolution is negligible), [CrO42−]=0.010[\mathrm{CrO_4^{2-}}]=0.010 M. Hence Ksp=[Ag+]2[CrO42−]=(10−5)2(10−2)=1.0×10−12K_{sp}=[\mathrm{Ag^+}]^2[\mathrm{CrO_4^{2-}}]=(10^{-5})^2(10^{-2})=1.0\times10^{-12}. Option (B) uses Ksp=[Ag+]2K_{sp}=[\mathrm{Ag^+}]^2 alone, (C) uses [Ag+][CrO42−][\mathrm{Ag^+}][\mathrm{CrO_4^{2-}}] (no square), and (D) wrongly doubles the silver-ion concentration, taking [Ag+]=2×10−5[\mathrm{Ag^+}]=2\times10^{-5} M, which gives (2×10−5)2(10−2)=4×10−12(2\times10^{-5})^2(10^{-2})=4\times10^{-12}.
