JEE Advanced 2021 Paper 2 Physics: Paragraph 2

In a circuit a battery of emf 12 V12\ \mathrm{V} and negligible internal resistance is connected through a switch to a resistor R1=2 kΩR_1=2\ \mathrm{k\Omega} in series with a parallel combination of resistor R2=2 kΩR_2=2\ \mathrm{k\Omega} and an initially uncharged capacitor C=100 μFC=100\ \mu\mathrm{F}. The switch is closed at t=0t=0. Let qq be the charge on the capacitor.

Question 1

Single correct option

The time at which q=450 μCq=450\ \mu\mathrm{C} is
  1. A. 69.3 ms69.3\ \mathrm{ms}
  2. B. 100 ms100\ \mathrm{ms}
  3. C. 138.6 ms138.6\ \mathrm{ms}
  4. D. 200 ms200\ \mathrm{ms}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 138.6 ms138.6\ \mathrm{ms}

Replace the battery, R1R_1 and R2R_2 seen by the capacitor by a Thevenin equivalent: Vth=12×R2R1+R2=6 VV_{th}=12\times\dfrac{R_2}{R_1+R_2}=6\ \mathrm{V} and Rth=R1∥R2=1 kΩR_{th}=R_1\parallel R_2=1\ \mathrm{k\Omega}. The time constant is τ=RthC=1000×100×10−6=0.1 s\tau=R_{th}C=1000\times100\times10^{-6}=0.1\ \mathrm{s}. The capacitor charges as q=CVth(1−e−t/τ)q=CV_{th}\left(1-e^{-t/\tau}\right) with final charge 600 μC600\ \mu\mathrm{C}. Setting q=450 μCq=450\ \mu\mathrm{C} gives 1−e−t/τ=0.751-e^{-t/\tau}=0.75, so t=τln⁡4=0.1×1.386=0.1386 s=138.6 mst=\tau\ln4=0.1\times1.386=0.1386\ \mathrm{s}=138.6\ \mathrm{ms}. The answer 69.369.3 ms corresponds to τln⁡2\tau\ln2 (half-charge) and 100100 ms is a single time constant, which would give only q=379 μCq=379\ \mu\mathrm{C}. So option (C) is the correct choice, and the exponential law must be used rather than a linear charging estimate.

Question 2

Single correct option

At the instant found in the previous question, the current drawn from the battery is
  1. A. 3.00 mA3.00\ \mathrm{mA}
  2. B. 3.75 mA3.75\ \mathrm{mA}
  3. C. 4.50 mA4.50\ \mathrm{mA}
  4. D. 6.00 mA6.00\ \mathrm{mA}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 3.75 mA3.75\ \mathrm{mA}

At that instant q=450 μCq=450\ \mu\mathrm{C}, so the capacitor voltage, which is also the voltage across R2R_2, is VC=q/C=4.5 VV_C=q/C=4.5\ \mathrm{V}. The current through R1R_1 is the battery current, and it equals I=12−VCR1=12−4.52000=3.75 mAI=\dfrac{12-V_C}{R_1}=\dfrac{12-4.5}{2000}=3.75\ \mathrm{mA}. As a check on the sign of the other branches, the current in R2R_2 is VC/R2=2.25 mAV_C/R_2=2.25\ \mathrm{mA} and the capacitor branch carries 3.75−2.25=1.5 mA3.75-2.25=1.5\ \mathrm{mA}, which matches dq/dt=(q∞−q)/τ=(600−450) μC/0.1 s=1.5 mAdq/dt=(q_\infty-q)/\tau=(600-450)\ \mu\mathrm{C}/0.1\ \mathrm{s}=1.5\ \mathrm{mA}. The battery current falls from 66 mA at t=0t=0 to 33 mA at steady state, so 3.753.75 mA lies between these values.
