One or more options correct

A very large open tank stands on a horizontal floor and is filled with water to a depth H=1.0 mH=1.0\ \mathrm{m}. A tiny hole is made in its vertical side wall at a depth dd below the free surface, and the emerging jet strikes the floor at a horizontal distance xx from the wall. Neglect viscosity and air resistance and take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Which of the following statement(s) is(are) correct?
  1. A. For d=0.20 md=0.20\ \mathrm{m}, the horizontal distance is x=0.80 mx=0.80\ \mathrm{m}.
  2. B. A hole at d=0.80 md=0.80\ \mathrm{m} gives the same xx as a hole at d=0.20 md=0.20\ \mathrm{m}.
  3. C. The largest possible xx for any position of the hole is 2.0 m2.0\ \mathrm{m}.
  4. D. For d=0.20 md=0.20\ \mathrm{m} the speed of efflux is 4 m s−14\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B

Torricelli's theorem gives the efflux speed v=2gdv=\sqrt{2gd}, and the jet then falls through a height H−dH-d in time t=2(H−d)/gt=\sqrt{2(H-d)/g}, so x=vt=2d(H−d)x=vt=2\sqrt{d(H-d)}. For d=0.20d=0.20 m this is 20.2×0.8=0.802\sqrt{0.2\times0.8}=0.80 m, so (A) is correct. The expression is symmetric under d→H−dd\to H-d, so d=0.80d=0.80 m gives the same range and (B) is correct. The product d(H−d)d(H-d) is largest at d=H/2d=H/2, giving xmax⁡=H=1.0x_{\max}=H=1.0 m, not 2.02.0 m, so (C) is wrong. Finally v=2×10×0.2=2 m s−1v=\sqrt{2\times10\times0.2}=2\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}, not 44, so (D) is wrong. Answer: A, B. Because the tank is very large, the free-surface level is practically constant, so steady Bernoulli flow applies between the surface and the hole.
