Single correct option

11-Methylcyclohexene is treated with BH3⋅THF\mathrm{BH_3\cdot THF} and then H2O2/NaOH\mathrm{H_2O_2/NaOH} to give A\mathbf{A}; A\mathbf{A} is oxidised with PCC to B\mathbf{B}; B\mathbf{B} reacts with excess CH3MgBr\mathrm{CH_3MgBr} followed by aqueous work-up to give C\mathbf{C}; and C\mathbf{C} is heated with conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} to give the major alkene D\mathbf{D} (Zaitsev product). The number of stereoisomers possible for C\mathbf{C} and the identity of D\mathbf{D} are
  1. A. 22; 1,21,2-dimethylcyclohexene
  2. B. 44; 11-methyl-22-methylenecyclohexane
  3. C. 44; 1,21,2-dimethylcyclohexene
  4. D. 22; 11-methyl-22-methylenecyclohexane
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 44; 1,21,2-dimethylcyclohexene

Hydroboration-oxidation of 11-methylcyclohexene is syn and anti-Markovnikov, giving transtrans-22-methylcyclohexanol A\mathbf{A} (racemic). PCC converts it to 22-methylcyclohexanone B\mathbf{B}, so the stereochemical history of A\mathbf{A} is irrelevant. CH3MgBr\mathrm{CH_3MgBr} adds to C=O\mathrm{C=O} to give 1,21,2-dimethylcyclohexan-11-ol C\mathbf{C}, which has two stereocentres (C1\mathrm{C1} and C2\mathrm{C2}) and no symmetry element, hence 22=42^2=4 stereoisomers. Acid-catalysed dehydration proceeds through the tertiary carbocation at C1\mathrm{C1}; loss of the C2\mathrm{C2} hydrogen gives the tetrasubstituted, most stable alkene 1,21,2-dimethylcyclohexene D\mathbf{D} (achiral), not the exocyclic alkene. Hence the answer is 44 and 1,21,2-dimethylcyclohexene.
