100 mL100\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.20 M NH30.20\ M\ \mathrm{NH_3} is mixed with 100 mL100\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.10 M HCl0.10\ M\ \mathrm{HCl} to form a buffer. Take Kb(NH3)=1.8×10−5K_b(\mathrm{NH_3})=1.8\times10^{-5} and Ksp[Mg(OH)2]=1.0×10−11K_{sp}[\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2}]=1.0\times10^{-11}. Neglecting any volume change and complexation on adding a soluble Mg2+\mathrm{Mg^{2+}} salt and treating the buffer composition as unchanged, the maximum concentration of Mg2+\mathrm{Mg^{2+}} that can be present without precipitation of Mg(OH)2\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2} is x×10−2 Mx\times10^{-2}\ M. The value of xx is ____. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 3.09

After mixing, HCl\mathrm{HCl} is limiting: NH3\mathrm{NH_3} initially 2020 mmol, HCl\mathrm{HCl} 1010 mmol, so 1010 mmol NH3\mathrm{NH_3} remain and 1010 mmol NH4+\mathrm{NH_4^+} form, in 200 mL200\ \mathrm{mL}: each is 0.050 M0.050\ M. For the basic buffer [OH−]=Kb[NH3][NH4+]=1.8×10−5×1=1.8×10−5 M[\mathrm{OH^-}]=K_b\frac{[\mathrm{NH_3}]}{[\mathrm{NH_4^+}]}=1.8\times10^{-5}\times1=1.8\times10^{-5}\ M. Precipitation of Mg(OH)2\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2} begins when [Mg2+][OH−]2=Ksp[\mathrm{Mg^{2+}}][\mathrm{OH^-}]^2=K_{sp}, so [Mg2+]max=1.0×10−11(1.8×10−5)2=10−113.24×10−10=3.086×10−2 M[\mathrm{Mg^{2+}}]_{max}=\frac{1.0\times10^{-11}}{(1.8\times10^{-5})^2}=\frac{10^{-11}}{3.24\times10^{-10}}=3.086\times10^{-2}\ M. Hence x≈3.09x\approx3.09. The key idea is that the buffer fixes [OH−][\mathrm{OH^-}] through the ratio [NH3]/[NH4+]=1[\mathrm{NH_3}]/[\mathrm{NH_4^+}]=1, independent of dilution, so the common-ion effect of NH4+\mathrm{NH_4^+} on the ionisation of ammonia sets the hydroxide ion concentration. Using the ratio of moles directly is valid since both species share one volume.
