Numerical answer

A solution is 0.010 M0.010\ \mathrm{M} in Mg2+\mathrm{Mg^{2+}} and contains 0.10 M0.10\ \mathrm{M} NH3\mathrm{NH_3}. Solid NH4Cl\mathrm{NH_4Cl} is added (no volume change) so that Mg(OH)2\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2} just fails to precipitate. Given Ksp[Mg(OH)2]=1.8×10−11K_{sp}[\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2}]=1.8\times10^{-11} and Kb(NH3)=1.8×10−5K_b(\mathrm{NH_3})=1.8\times10^{-5}, the minimum concentration of NH4+\mathrm{NH_4^+} required is x×10−2 Mx\times10^{-2}\ \mathrm{M}. The value of xx is ______. (Give the answer correct to two decimal places.)

Answer: 4.24

Precipitation is just avoided when the ionic product equals KspK_{sp}: [OH−]2=Ksp/[Mg2+]=1.8×10−11/0.010=1.8×10−9[\mathrm{OH^-}]^2=K_{sp}/[\mathrm{Mg^{2+}}]=1.8\times10^{-11}/0.010=1.8\times10^{-9}, so [OH−]=4.243×10−5[\mathrm{OH^-}]=4.243\times10^{-5} M. The buffer must hold this hydroxide concentration: Kb=[NH4+][OH−]/[NH3]K_b=[\mathrm{NH_4^+}][\mathrm{OH^-}]/[\mathrm{NH_3}], giving [NH4+]=Kb[NH3]/[OH−]=(1.8×10−5)(0.10)/(4.243×10−5)=0.04243[\mathrm{NH_4^+}]=K_b[\mathrm{NH_3}]/[\mathrm{OH^-}]=(1.8\times10^{-5})(0.10)/(4.243\times10^{-5})=0.04243 M. Hence x=4.24x=4.24. Any larger ammonium concentration lowers [OH−][\mathrm{OH^-}] further and keeps the hydroxide in solution. We neglected the small ammonium contribution of ionised ammonia itself because the buffer swamps it. The answer is expressed in units of 10−210^{-2} M, so 0.04243 M corresponds to 4.24. A larger ammonium concentration is the safe direction, so this is a minimum requirement.
