JEE Advanced 2016 Paper 2 Mathematics: Paragraph 2

For each positive integer nn define an=∑k=1nnn2+k2a_{n}=\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{n}{n^{2}+k^{2}} and cn=∑k=1nkn2+k2c_{n}=\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{k}{n^{2}+k^{2}}. Both are Riemann sums, with right end points, for suitable functions on [0,1][0,1]. For a function ff with a continuous derivative on [0,1][0,1] one has 1n∑k=1nf ⁣(kn)=∫01f(x) dx+f(1)−f(0)2n+o ⁣(1n)\dfrac1n\sum_{k=1}^{n}f\!\left(\dfrac kn\right)=\displaystyle\int_0^1 f(x)\,dx+\dfrac{f(1)-f(0)}{2n}+o\!\left(\dfrac1n\right).

Question 1

Single correct option

The value of lim⁡n→∞n(π4−an)\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\infty}n\left(\dfrac{\pi}{4}-a_{n}\right) is
  1. A. 12\dfrac12
  2. B. 18\dfrac18
  3. C. 14\dfrac14
  4. D. π8\dfrac{\pi}{8}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 14\dfrac14

Write an=1n∑k=1nf(kn)a_n=\frac1n\sum_{k=1}^{n}f\left(\frac kn\right) with f(x)=11+x2f(x)=\frac1{1+x^{2}}, since nn2+k2=1n⋅11+(k/n)2\frac{n}{n^{2}+k^{2}}=\frac1n\cdot\frac1{1+(k/n)^{2}}. By the stated expansion, an=∫01dx1+x2+f(1)−f(0)2n+o(1n)=π4+12−12n+o(1n)=π4−14n+o(1n)a_n=\int_0^1\frac{dx}{1+x^{2}}+\frac{f(1)-f(0)}{2n}+o\left(\frac1n\right)=\frac\pi4+\frac{\frac12-1}{2n}+o\left(\frac1n\right)=\frac\pi4-\frac1{4n}+o\left(\frac1n\right). Hence n(π4−an)→14n\left(\frac\pi4-a_n\right)\to\frac14. A numerical check at n=105n=10^{5} gives 0.250000…0.250000\ldots. Option (A) results from using f(1)−f(0)n\frac{f(1)-f(0)}{n} with the wrong factor, option (B) from halving again, and option (D) from using the limit π4\frac\pi4 itself.

Question 2

Single correct option

The value of lim⁡n→∞cnan\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\infty}\dfrac{c_{n}}{a_{n}} is
  1. A. ln⁡2π\dfrac{\ln2}{\pi}
  2. B. 2ln⁡2π\dfrac{2\ln2}{\pi}
  3. C. π2ln⁡2\dfrac{\pi}{2\ln2}
  4. D. 4ln⁡2π\dfrac{4\ln2}{\pi}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2ln⁡2π\dfrac{2\ln2}{\pi}

Here cn=1n∑k=1ng(kn)c_n=\frac1n\sum_{k=1}^{n}g\left(\frac kn\right) with g(x)=x1+x2g(x)=\frac{x}{1+x^{2}}, because kn2+k2=1n⋅k/n1+(k/n)2\frac{k}{n^{2}+k^{2}}=\frac1n\cdot\frac{k/n}{1+(k/n)^{2}}. As n→∞n\to\infty the Riemann sums converge to the integrals: cn→∫01x1+x2dx=12ln⁡2c_n\to\int_0^1\frac{x}{1+x^{2}}dx=\frac12\ln2 and an→∫01dx1+x2=π4a_n\to\int_0^1\frac{dx}{1+x^{2}}=\frac\pi4. The limit of the ratio is therefore 12ln⁡2π4=2ln⁡2π≈0.4413\frac{\frac12\ln2}{\frac\pi4}=\frac{2\ln2}{\pi}\approx0.4413, which agrees with direct summation for n=105n=10^{5}. Option (A) is half the correct value, option (C) is the reciprocal, and option (D) is twice the correct value.
