Let M=beginpmatrix1&2&0\\0&1&2\\0&0&1endpmatrix and let I be the identity matrix of order 3.

One or more options correct

Let M=(120012001)M=\begin{pmatrix}1&2&0\\0&1&2\\0&0&1\end{pmatrix} and let II be the identity matrix of order 3. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The (1,3)(1,3) entry of M10M^{10} is 180180
  2. B. MM is diagonalizable over R\mathbb{R}
  3. C. The (1,3)(1,3) entry of M−1M^{-1} is 44
  4. D. The sum of all nine entries of M−1M^{-1} equals 11
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, C

Write M=I+NM=I+N with N=(020002000)N=\begin{pmatrix}0&2&0\\0&0&2\\0&0&0\end{pmatrix}, so N2N^2 has the single nonzero entry 44 at position (1,3)(1,3) and N3=0N^3=0. Then Mn=I+nN+(n2)N2M^n=I+nN+\binom n2N^2, whose (1,3)(1,3) entry is 4(n2)=2n(n−1)4\binom n2=2n(n-1); for n=10n=10 this is 180180, so (A) is true. MM has the single eigenvalue 11 but M≠IM\neq I (equivalently N≠0N\neq0), so it is not diagonalizable and (B) is false. M−1=I−N+N2=(1−2401−2001)M^{-1}=I-N+N^2=\begin{pmatrix}1&-2&4\\0&1&-2\\0&0&1\end{pmatrix}, whose (1,3)(1,3) entry is 44, so (C) is true. The entries of M−1M^{-1} add to 3−2−2+4=33-2-2+4=3, not 11, so (D) is false. Answer: A and C.
