Let M=beginpmatrix2&-1\\1&0endpmatrix and let n be a positive integer.

One or more options correct

Let M=(2−110)M=\begin{pmatrix}2&-1\\1&0\end{pmatrix} and let nn be a positive integer. Which of the following statements is (are) correct?
  1. A. Mn=nM−(n−1)IM^{n}=nM-(n-1)I
  2. B. tr⁡ ⁣(M10)=12\operatorname{tr}\!\left(M^{10}\right)=12
  3. C. M−1=(0−112)M^{-1}=\begin{pmatrix}0&-1\\1&2\end{pmatrix}
  4. D. MnM^{n} is a symmetric matrix for some positive integer nn
Show answer and solution

Answer: A

The characteristic polynomial of MM is λ2−2λ+1=(λ−1)2\lambda^2-2\lambda+1=(\lambda-1)^2, so (M−I)2=0(M-I)^2=0. Writing M=I+NM=I+N with N2=0N^2=0, the binomial theorem gives Mn=I+nN=I+n(M−I)=nM−(n−1)IM^n=I+nN=I+n(M-I)=nM-(n-1)I: (A) is true. Hence M10=(11−1010−9)M^{10}=\begin{pmatrix}11&-10\\10&-9\end{pmatrix} with trace 22 (indeed tr⁡Mn=2\operatorname{tr}M^n=2 for all nn), so (B) is false. Since det⁡M=1\det M=1, M−1=(01−12)M^{-1}=\begin{pmatrix}0&1\\-1&2\end{pmatrix}, which differs from the matrix in (C) in the signs of the off-diagonal entries: false. Finally the off-diagonal entries of MnM^n are −n-n and nn, which are unequal for every n≥1n\ge1, so MnM^n is never symmetric: (D) false.
