JEE Advanced 2021 Paper 2 Mathematics: Paragraph 1

Let A=(3−111)A=\begin{pmatrix}3&-1\\1&1\end{pmatrix}. Define sequences (xn)(x_n) and (yn)(y_n) by (xnyn)=An(10)\begin{pmatrix}x_n\\y_n\end{pmatrix}=A^{n}\begin{pmatrix}1\\0\end{pmatrix} for n≥0n\ge0. It is known that the characteristic polynomial of AA has a repeated root.

Question 1

Single correct option

The value of y10y_{10} is
  1. A. 25602560
  2. B. 51205120
  3. C. 61446144
  4. D. 1024010240
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 51205120

The characteristic polynomial is λ2−4λ+4=(λ−2)2\lambda^2-4\lambda+4=(\lambda-2)^2, so A=2I+NA=2I+N with N=A−2I=(1−11−1)N=A-2I=\begin{pmatrix}1&-1\\1&-1\end{pmatrix} and N2=0N^2=0. Therefore An=2nI+n2n−1NA^n=2^nI+n2^{n-1}N, and An(10)=(2n+n2n−1n2n−1)A^{n}\binom10=\binom{2^n+n2^{n-1}}{n2^{n-1}}. So yn=n2n−1y_n=n2^{n-1} and y10=10⋅29=5120y_{10}=10\cdot2^9=5120. Option 6144 is x10x_{10}, which a student would obtain by reading the wrong component; 2560 comes from using n2n−2n2^{n-2}, and 10240 from n2nn2^{n}.

Question 2

Single correct option

The smallest positive integer nn for which xn>104x_n>10^{4} is
  1. A. 1010
  2. B. 1111
  3. C. 1212
  4. D. 1313
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1111

From An=2nI+n2n−1NA^n=2^nI+n2^{n-1}N with N=(1−11−1)N=\begin{pmatrix}1&-1\\1&-1\end{pmatrix}, the first component is xn=2n+n2n−1=2n−1(n+2)x_n=2^n+n2^{n-1}=2^{n-1}(n+2). Evaluate: x9=256⋅11=2816x_9=256\cdot11=2816, x10=512⋅12=6144x_{10}=512\cdot12=6144, x11=1024⋅13=13312x_{11}=1024\cdot13=13312. Since xnx_n is increasing and x10=6144<104<13312=x11x_{10}=6144<10^4<13312=x_{11}, the smallest such nn is 1111. Option 1010 results from mistaking y10y_{10}-type growth, while 1212 and 1313 are larger than necessary.
