Single correct option

Let M=(120012001)M=\begin{pmatrix}1&2&0\\0&1&2\\0&0&1\end{pmatrix}. For a positive integer nn, the (1,3)(1,3) entry of Mn+M−nM^{n}+M^{-n} equals 14441444. Then nn equals
  1. A. 1717
  2. B. 1818
  3. C. 1919
  4. D. 2020
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1919

Write M=I+NM=I+N with N=(020002000)N=\begin{pmatrix}0&2&0\\0&0&2\\0&0&0\end{pmatrix}, so N2N^2 has a single non-zero entry 44 at position (1,3)(1,3) and N3=0N^3=0. The binomial series terminates: Mn=I+nN+(n2)N2M^{n}=I+nN+\binom n2N^2 and M−n=I−nN+(−n2)N2=I−nN+n(n+1)2N2M^{-n}=I-nN+\binom{-n}{2}N^2=I-nN+\frac{n(n+1)}2N^2. Hence the (1,3)(1,3) entries are 4(n2)=2n(n−1)4\binom n2=2n(n-1) and 2n(n+1)2n(n+1). Their sum is 4n24n^2. Setting 4n2=14444n^2=1444 gives n2=361n^2=361, so n=19n=19. The other options give 4n2=11564n^2=1156, 12961296 and 16001600, none of which equals 14441444.
