JEE Advanced 2018 Paper 1 Mathematics: Paragraph 1

Let M=(2111)M=\begin{pmatrix}2&1\\1&1\end{pmatrix}. For integers n≥0n\ge0 define xn,ynx_n,y_n by (xnyn)=Mn(10)\begin{pmatrix}x_n\\y_n\end{pmatrix}=M^n\begin{pmatrix}1\\0\end{pmatrix}, so that (x0,y0)=(1,0)(x_0,y_0)=(1,0), (x1,y1)=(2,1)(x_1,y_1)=(2,1), (x2,y2)=(5,3)(x_2,y_2)=(5,3) and so on. Use the matrix MM and the sequences (xn)(x_n), (yn)(y_n) defined above to answer the following two questions.

Question 1

Single correct option

The value of lim⁡n→∞xnyn\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{x_n}{y_n} is
  1. A. 1+52\dfrac{1+\sqrt5}{2}
  2. B. 3+52\dfrac{3+\sqrt5}{2}
  3. C. 5−12\dfrac{\sqrt5-1}{2}
  4. D. 22
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1+52\dfrac{1+\sqrt5}{2}

Since MM has positive entries, Mn(1,0)TM^n(1,0)^T aligns with the dominant eigenvector. The characteristic equation is λ2−3λ+1=0\lambda^2-3\lambda+1=0, so the dominant eigenvalue is λ=3+52\lambda=\frac{3+\sqrt5}2. For an eigenvector (x,y)(x,y): 2x+y=λx2x+y=\lambda x, so y=(λ−2)x=5−12xy=(\lambda-2)x=\frac{\sqrt5-1}2x. Therefore xy=25−1=5+12\frac xy=\frac2{\sqrt5-1}=\frac{\sqrt5+1}2. Numerically xn/yn=5/3, 13/8, 34/21,…x_n/y_n=5/3,\,13/8,\,34/21,\dots approaches 1.6181.618, consistent with this. Option B is the eigenvalue itself (the ratio xn+1/xnx_{n+1}/x_n, not xn/ynx_n/y_n), option C is the reciprocal yn/xny_n/x_n and option D is only a rough guess.

Question 2

Single correct option

The value of ∑n=0∞xn+yn3n\displaystyle\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{x_n+y_n}{3^n} is
  1. A. 66
  2. B. 99
  3. C. 1212
  4. D. 33
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 99

Let vn=Mne1v_n=M^n e_1 with e1=(1,0)Te_1=(1,0)^T. Then ∑n≥0vn3n=(I−M3)−1e1\sum_{n\ge0}\frac{v_n}{3^n}=\left(I-\frac M3\right)^{-1}e_1, which converges since the dominant eigenvalue 3+52≈2.618<3\frac{3+\sqrt5}2\approx2.618<3. Now I−M3=13(1−1−12)I-\frac M3=\frac13\begin{pmatrix}1&-1\\-1&2\end{pmatrix} with determinant 19(2−1)=19\frac19(2-1)=\frac19, so its inverse is 3(2111)3\begin{pmatrix}2&1\\1&1\end{pmatrix}. Applying to e1e_1 gives (6,3)T(6,3)^T. Thus ∑xn/3n=6\sum x_n/3^n=6 and ∑yn/3n=3\sum y_n/3^n=3, and the required sum is 99.
