The sum of all four entries of the matrix A^-50 is

Single correct option

Let A=(3−14−1)A=\begin{pmatrix}3&-1\\4&-1\end{pmatrix}. The sum of all four entries of the matrix A−50A^{-50} is
  1. A. −148-148
  2. B. 148148
  3. C. 152152
  4. D. −100-100
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) −148-148

Write A=I+NA=I+N with N=(2−14−2)N=\begin{pmatrix}2&-1\\4&-2\end{pmatrix}. Then N2=(4−4−2+28−8−4+4)=ON^2=\begin{pmatrix}4-4&-2+2\\8-8&-4+4\end{pmatrix}=O, so NN is nilpotent. Hence, by the binomial theorem (terms with N2N^2 and higher vanish and II, NN commute), Ak=I+kNA^{k}=I+kN for every integer kk, including negatives, because A−1=I−NA^{-1}=I-N satisfies (I+N)(I−N)=I(I+N)(I-N)=I. Therefore A−50=I−50N=(−9950−200101)A^{-50}=I-50N=\begin{pmatrix}-99&50\\-200&101\end{pmatrix}, whose entries sum to −99+50−200+101=−148-99+50-200+101=-148. The value 152152 is the sum for A50=I+50NA^{50}=I+50N and is the common mistake of ignoring the negative exponent. Nilpotent decomposition is far faster than diagonalising here because the only eigenvalue is 1 with a single Jordan block.
