Let N=beginpmatrix0&1&2\\0&0&3\\0&0&0endpmatrix and M=I+N.

One or more options correct

Let N=(012003000)N=\begin{pmatrix}0&1&2\\0&0&3\\0&0&0\end{pmatrix} and M=I+NM=I+N. Which of the following is/are correct?
  1. A. The (1,3)(1,3) entry of M10M^{10} is 135135
  2. B. The (1,3)(1,3) entry of M−1M^{-1} is 11
  3. C. The (2,3)(2,3) entry of M10M^{10} is 2020
  4. D. Mn=IM^n=I for some positive integer nn
Show answer and solution

Answer: B

Since NN is strictly upper triangular, N3=0N^3=0 and N2N^2 has only the (1,3)(1,3) entry, equal to 1⋅3=31\cdot3=3. Because II and NN commute, Mn=I+nN+(n2)N2M^n=I+nN+\binom n2N^2. For n=10n=10 the (1,3)(1,3) entry is 10⋅2+45⋅3=15510\cdot2+45\cdot3=155, not 135135, so (A) is false. The (2,3)(2,3) entry is 10⋅3=3010\cdot3=30, not 2020, so (C) is false. The inverse is M−1=I−N+N2M^{-1}=I-N+N^2, whose (1,3)(1,3) entry is −2+3=1-2+3=1, so (B) is true. For (D), Mn=IM^n=I would need nN+(n2)N2=0nN+\binom n2N^2=0, impossible since the (1,2)(1,2) entry is n≠0n\ne0, so (D) is false.
