From the following oxides, how many are amphoteric: ZnO, Al2O3, PbO, SnO2, BeO, Cr2O3, CO, N2O, B2O3, CaO, MgO, Mn2O7?

Numerical answer

From the following oxides, how many are amphoteric: ZnO\mathrm{ZnO}, Al2O3\mathrm{Al_2O_3}, PbO\mathrm{PbO}, SnO2\mathrm{SnO_2}, BeO\mathrm{BeO}, Cr2O3\mathrm{Cr_2O_3}, CO\mathrm{CO}, N2O\mathrm{N_2O}, B2O3\mathrm{B_2O_3}, CaO\mathrm{CaO}, MgO\mathrm{MgO}, Mn2O7\mathrm{Mn_2O_7}?

Answer: 6

Amphoteric oxides dissolve in both acids and strong alkalis. ZnO\mathrm{ZnO} gives Zn2+\mathrm{Zn^{2+}} with acid and [Zn(OH)4]2−\mathrm{[Zn(OH)_4]^{2-}} with alkali; Al2O3\mathrm{Al_2O_3} gives Al3+\mathrm{Al^{3+}} and [Al(OH)4]−\mathrm{[Al(OH)_4]^-}; PbO\mathrm{PbO} gives Pb2+\mathrm{Pb^{2+}} and plumbite; SnO2\mathrm{SnO_2} dissolves in conc. acids and fused alkali to give stannate; BeO\mathrm{BeO} gives Be2+\mathrm{Be^{2+}} and beryllate; Cr2O3\mathrm{Cr_2O_3} gives Cr3+\mathrm{Cr^{3+}} and chromite. That makes six. The others are not amphoteric: CO\mathrm{CO} and N2O\mathrm{N_2O} are neutral; B2O3\mathrm{B_2O_3} and Mn2O7\mathrm{Mn_2O_7} are acidic (boric acid and permanganic acid); CaO\mathrm{CaO} and MgO\mathrm{MgO} are basic. Hence the number of amphoteric oxides is 6.
