Answer: 2.24

Since the circle touches the parabola at (1,1)(1,1), the radius to that point is along the normal to the parabola there. The slope of the tangent is 2x=22x=2, so the tangent direction is (1,2)(1,2) and the normal direction is (−2,1)(-2,1). Hence the centre is C=(1−2s, 1+s)C=(1-2s,\,1+s) for some real ss. The circle passes through the origin, so ∣CO∣=∣C(1,1)∣|CO|=|C(1,1)|: (1−2s)2+(1+s)2=(2s)2+s2=5s2(1-2s)^2+(1+s)^2=(2s)^2+s^2=5s^2. Expanding, 2−2s+5s2=5s22-2s+5s^2=5s^2, so s=1s=1 and C=(−1,2)C=(-1,2). The radius is ∣C(1,1)∣=4+1=5≈2.236|C(1,1)|=\sqrt{4+1}=\sqrt5\approx2.236. Check: ∣CO∣=1+4=5|CO|=\sqrt{1+4}=\sqrt5 as well, and (2,−1)⋅(1,2)=0(2,-1)\cdot(1,2)=0. The radius to two decimals is 2.242.24.
