The circles C1: x^2+y^2=25 and C2: (x-7)^2+(y-1)^2=25 intersect at two points A and B.

One or more options correct

The circles C1: x2+y2=25C_1:\ x^2+y^2=25 and C2: (x−7)2+(y−1)2=25C_2:\ (x-7)^2+(y-1)^2=25 intersect at two points AA and BB. Which of the following is/are correct?
  1. A. C1C_1 and C2C_2 cut each other orthogonally
  2. B. The length of the common chord ABAB is 55
  3. C. The radical axis of C1C_1 and C2C_2 is 7x+y=507x+y=50
  4. D. The quadrilateral formed by the two centres and the points A,BA,B has area 5050
Show answer and solution

Answer: A

The centres are O1(0,0)O_1(0,0) and O2(7,1)O_2(7,1), so O1O22=50=r12+r22O_1O_2^2=50=r_1^2+r_2^2; hence the circles are orthogonal (A true). Subtracting the equations gives 14x+2y−50=014x+2y-50=0, i.e. the radical axis is 7x+y=257x+y=25, not 7x+y=507x+y=50 (C false). Solving with x2+y2=25x^2+y^2=25 gives A(3,4)A(3,4) and B(4,−3)B(4,-3), so AB=1+49=52AB=\sqrt{1+49}=5\sqrt2, not 55 (B false). The quadrilateral O1AO2BO_1AO_2B is a kite with perpendicular diagonals O1O2=52O_1O_2=5\sqrt2 and AB=52AB=5\sqrt2, so its area is 12⋅52⋅52=25\tfrac12\cdot5\sqrt2\cdot5\sqrt2=25 (it is in fact a square of side 55), not 5050 (D false).
