Single correct option

From a variable point PP on the line x+y=10x+y=10, two tangents are drawn to the circle x2+y2=25x^{2}+y^{2}=25, and the chord of contact is ABAB. The minimum possible length of ABAB is
  1. A. 525\sqrt{2}
  2. B. 1010
  3. C. 535\sqrt{3}
  4. D. 55
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 525\sqrt{2}

For P(h,k)P(h,k) with h+k=10h+k=10, the chord of contact is hx+ky=25hx+ky=25. Substituting k=10−hk=10-h gives h(x−y)+10y−25=0h(x-y)+10y-25=0 for every hh, so the chord always passes through the fixed point FF given by x=yx=y, 10y=2510y=25, i.e. F(52,52)F\left(\tfrac52,\tfrac52\right). A chord through FF has length 225−d22\sqrt{25-d^{2}}, where dd is its distance from the centre OO, and d≤OF=522d\le OF=\tfrac{5\sqrt2}{2}. The length is least when d=OFd=OF, i.e. when AB⊥OFAB\perp OF. Then AB=225−252=2⋅52=52AB=2\sqrt{25-\tfrac{25}{2}}=2\cdot\tfrac{5}{\sqrt2}=5\sqrt2. This chord belongs to P=(5,5)P=(5,5), the point of the line nearest OO (indeed AB=2⋅51−25/50=52≈7.07AB=2\cdot5\sqrt{1-25/50}=5\sqrt2\approx7.07). Option (B) 1010 is the diameter, attained only if the line passed through OO; (C) and (D) result from using d=0d=0 incorrectly or dropping the factor 2.
