(S)-2-Bromooctane is treated successively with (i) aqueous NaOH (pure SN2), (ii) PBr3 (SN2 at carbon), (iii) NaCN (pure SN2).

Single correct option

(S)-2-Bromooctane is treated successively with (i) aqueous NaOH (pure SN2S_N2), (ii) PBr3\mathrm{PBr_3} (SN2S_N2 at carbon), (iii) NaCN (pure SN2S_N2). The final product is
  1. A. (R)-2-methyloctanenitrile
  2. B. racemic 2-methyloctanenitrile
  3. C. (R)-2-bromooctane
  4. D. (S)-2-methyloctanenitrile
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) (R)-2-methyloctanenitrile

Each SN2S_N2 step inverts the configuration at C-2. In steps (i) and (ii) the priority order stays the same (Br\mathrm{Br} or OH\mathrm{OH} >> C6H13\mathrm{C_6H_{13}} chain >> CH3>H\mathrm{CH_3}>\mathrm{H}), so (S)-bromide →\to (R)-2-octanol →\to (S)-2-bromooctane (two inversions, net retention). In step (iii) CN\mathrm{CN} (carbon with N,N,N) outranks the chain carbon (C,H,H), so the order is CN>chain>CH3>H\mathrm{CN}>\mathrm{chain}>\mathrm{CH_3}>\mathrm{H}, corresponding to the same order as with Br\mathrm{Br}. Third inversion converts (S) to (R): (R)-2-methyloctanenitrile.
