In aqueous solution the correct order of basic strength of ethylamine, diethylamine, triethylamine and ammonia is

Single correct option

In aqueous solution the correct order of basic strength of ethylamine, diethylamine, triethylamine and ammonia is
  1. A. Et3N>Et2NH>EtNH2>NH3\mathrm{Et_3N > Et_2NH > EtNH_2 > NH_3}
  2. B. Et2NH>Et3N>EtNH2>NH3\mathrm{Et_2NH > Et_3N > EtNH_2 > NH_3}
  3. C. Et2NH>EtNH2>Et3N>NH3\mathrm{Et_2NH > EtNH_2 > Et_3N > NH_3}
  4. D. EtNH2>Et2NH>Et3N>NH3\mathrm{EtNH_2 > Et_2NH > Et_3N > NH_3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Et2NH>Et3N>EtNH2>NH3\mathrm{Et_2NH > Et_3N > EtNH_2 > NH_3}

In water the basicity of alkylamines depends on the +I+I effect, solvation (hydrogen bonding) of the conjugate ammonium ion and steric hindrance. For ethyl groups the experimental pKbpK_b values are about 3.03.0 for Et2NH\mathrm{Et_2NH}, 3.253.25 for Et3N\mathrm{Et_3N}, 3.353.35 for EtNH2\mathrm{EtNH_2} and 4.754.75 for NH3\mathrm{NH_3}. Hence Et2NH>Et3N>EtNH2>NH3\mathrm{Et_2NH > Et_3N > EtNH_2 > NH_3}.
