Single correct option

Compound A (C8H9NO\mathrm{C_8H_9NO}) on treatment with Br2/KOH\mathrm{Br_2/KOH} gives B. B reacts with NaNO2/HCl\mathrm{NaNO_2/HCl} at 273 K273\ \mathrm{K} with evolution of N2\mathrm{N_2} to give C, and C on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} gives benzoic acid. A is
  1. A. 2-phenylacetamide
  2. B. 4-methylbenzamide
  3. C. N-methylbenzamide
  4. D. acetanilide

Answer: (A) 2-phenylacetamide

Hoffmann bromamide degradation needs a primary amide and removes one carbon: C6H5CH2CONH2→C6H5CH2NH2\mathrm{C_6H_5CH_2CONH_2\to C_6H_5CH_2NH_2} (B). An aliphatic-type primary amine reacts with HNO2\mathrm{HNO_2} to give the alcohol with N2\mathrm{N_2} evolution: benzyl alcohol (C), which oxidises to benzoic acid. 4-Methylbenzamide would give pp-toluidine, whose diazonium salt is stable at 273 K273\ \mathrm{K} (no N2\mathrm{N_2}), and the secondary amide and anilide cannot undergo Hoffmann degradation.
