The total number of lone pairs of electrons on the central atoms in XeF4, XeOF4, I3^- and ClF3 is

Numerical answer

The total number of lone pairs of electrons on the central atoms in XeF4\mathrm{XeF_4}, XeOF4\mathrm{XeOF_4}, I3−\mathrm{I_3^-} and ClF3\mathrm{ClF_3} is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 8

XeF4\mathrm{XeF_4}: Xe has 88 valence electrons, 44 used in Xe-F bonds, giving 22 lone pairs. XeOF4\mathrm{XeOF_4}: 66 electrons in bonds (with Xe=O\mathrm{Xe=O} counted as using 22 electrons from Xe), giving 11 lone pair. I3−\mathrm{I_3^-}: central I has 7+1=87+1=8 electrons, 22 in bonds, giving 33 lone pairs. ClF3\mathrm{ClF_3}: 7−3=47-3=4 electrons, giving 22 lone pairs. Total =2+1+3+2=8=2+1+3+2=8.
