Numerical answer

Among XeF4\mathrm{XeF_4}, SF6\mathrm{SF_6}, IF5\mathrm{IF_5}, PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5}, [Ni(CN)4]2−\mathrm{[Ni(CN)_4]^{2-}}, [NiCl4]2−\mathrm{[NiCl_4]^{2-}}, ICl4−\mathrm{ICl_4^-} and [Fe(CN)6]3−\mathrm{[Fe(CN)_6]^{3-}}, the number of species whose central atom uses sp3d2sp^3d^2 or d2sp3d^2sp^3 hybrid orbitals is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

XeF4\mathrm{XeF_4} (4 bp + 2 lp), SF6\mathrm{SF_6} (6 bp), IF5\mathrm{IF_5} (5 bp + 1 lp), ICl4−\mathrm{ICl_4^-} (4 bp + 2 lp) are all sp3d2sp^3d^2. [Fe(CN)6]3−\mathrm{[Fe(CN)_6]^{3-}} is d2sp3d^2sp^3 (inner orbital, strong field). PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} is sp3dsp^3d; [Ni(CN)4]2−\mathrm{[Ni(CN)_4]^{2-}} is dsp2dsp^2 (square planar); [NiCl4]2−\mathrm{[NiCl_4]^{2-}} is sp3sp^3 (tetrahedral). Count =5=5.
