Which pair of species has the same bond order but different magnetic behaviour?

Single correct option

Which pair of species has the same bond order but different magnetic behaviour?
  1. A. N2\mathrm{N_2} and CO\mathrm{CO}
  2. B. B2\mathrm{B_2} and O22−\mathrm{O_2^{2-}}
  3. C. O2−\mathrm{O_2^-} and F2\mathrm{F_2}
  4. D. N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} and O2+\mathrm{O_2^+}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) B2\mathrm{B_2} and O22−\mathrm{O_2^{2-}}

B2\mathrm{B_2} (1010 electrons, π2p\pi_{2p} half-filled): bond order 11, paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons. O22−\mathrm{O_2^{2-}} (1818 electrons, all MOs filled up to π∗\pi^*): bond order 11, diamagnetic. So the bond orders are equal while magnetism differs. Other pairs: N2,CO\mathrm{N_2},\mathrm{CO} both order 33 and diamagnetic; O2−\mathrm{O_2^-} (1.51.5) and F2\mathrm{F_2} (11) differ in order; N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} and O2+\mathrm{O_2^+} both 2.52.5 and both paramagnetic.
