Single correct option

Let PP be the point in the first quadrant on the ellipse x216+y212=1\dfrac{x^2}{16}+\dfrac{y^2}{12}=1 whose abscissa is 22. The tangent at PP meets the coordinate axes at AA and BB. The area of triangle OABOAB, where OO is the origin, is
  1. A. 1212
  2. B. 1616
  3. C. 2424
  4. D. 3232
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1616

Put x=2x=2: y212=1−416=34\frac{y^2}{12}=1-\frac4{16}=\frac34, so y2=9y^2=9 and P=(2,3)P=(2,3) in the first quadrant. The tangent at (x1,y1)(x_1,y_1) is xx116+yy112=1\frac{xx_1}{16}+\frac{yy_1}{12}=1, i.e. 2x16+3y12=1\frac{2x}{16}+\frac{3y}{12}=1, which simplifies to x8+y4=1\frac x8+\frac y4=1. It meets the axes at A(8,0)A(8,0) and B(0,4)B(0,4). The area of right triangle OABOAB is 12⋅8⋅4=16\frac12\cdot8\cdot4=16. The product OA⋅OB=32OA\cdot OB=32 is the trap answer.
