The length of the latus rectum of the ellipse (x^2/(25)+(y^2/(16)=1 is

Single correct option

The length of the latus rectum of the ellipse x225+y216=1\dfrac{x^2}{25}+\dfrac{y^2}{16}=1 is
  1. A. 325\dfrac{32}{5}
  2. B. 165\dfrac{16}{5}
  3. C. 254\dfrac{25}{4}
  4. D. 85\dfrac{8}{5}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 325\dfrac{32}{5}

Here a2=25a^2=25 and b2=16b^2=16, so a=5a=5 and b=4b=4 with a>ba>b. The latus rectum has length 2b2a=2⋅165=325\dfrac{2b^2}{a}=\dfrac{2\cdot16}{5}=\dfrac{32}{5}. The option 16/516/5 forgets the factor 2 and 25/425/4 uses 2a2/b2a^2/b with the axes interchanged.
