Single correct option

The total number of stereoisomers possible for the two complex ions [Co(en)2Cl2]+[\mathrm{Co(en)_2Cl_2}]^+ and [Co(en)3]3+[\mathrm{Co(en)_3}]^{3+} taken together is (en = ethane-1,2-diamine)

Answer: (B) 5

[Co(en)2Cl2]+[\mathrm{Co(en)_2Cl_2}]^+ is octahedral M(AA)2b2M(AA)_2b_2: the trans form is achiral (one isomer, has a mirror plane); the cis form lacks a mirror plane and exists as a pair of enantiomers. That gives 3 stereoisomers. [Co(en)3]3+[\mathrm{Co(en)_3}]^{3+} has three chelate rings arranged like a propeller, giving Δ\Delta and Λ\Lambda enantiomers: 2. Total =3+2=5=3+2=5.
