Single correct option

In a meter bridge the left gap holds an unknown resistance XX and the right gap holds 15 Ω15\ \Omega; the null point is at 40 cm40\ \mathrm{cm} from the left end. A second resistance YY is then connected in parallel with XX, and the null point moves to 30 cm30\ \mathrm{cm} from the left end. The value of YY is
  1. A. 10 Ω10\ \Omega
  2. B. 24 Ω24\ \Omega
  3. C. 30 Ω30\ \Omega
  4. D. 18 Ω18\ \Omega
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 18 Ω18\ \Omega

Balance condition: X15=l100−l\dfrac{X}{15}=\dfrac{l}{100-l}. First case: X=15×4060=10 ΩX=15\times\dfrac{40}{60}=10\ \Omega. After adding YY in parallel the effective left resistance is X′=15×3070=457 ΩX'=15\times\dfrac{30}{70}=\dfrac{45}{7}\ \Omega. Then 1X′=1X+1Y\dfrac{1}{X'}=\dfrac1X+\dfrac1Y gives 1Y=745−110=14−990=118\dfrac1Y=\dfrac{7}{45}-\dfrac{1}{10}=\dfrac{14-9}{90}=\dfrac1{18}, so Y=18 ΩY=18\ \Omega. A parallel resistor always lowers the left resistance, which is why the null point shifts towards the left end.
